Membership policy
In brief, if you are a member of the Anglican or Methodist Church - minister, student or parishioner, you are welcome to register as a library member.
Students and faculty of the School of Theology, University of Auckland, and those associated with churches with whom we have reciprocal arrangements are also welcome to contact the library about membership.
Others who do not fit the above categories may be granted membership on payment of a fee.
Members are entitled to borrow books, and to access our electronic databases and full text periodicals.
Anyone is welcome to visit the library and to read material while there.

The loan period is four weeks. Books may be renewed for a further four weeks via the online catalogue. After this, books must be brought back into the library for any further renewal.
Fines
- A fine is payable on all overdue items: it is suggested that you request a limited number of items at a time, so that you can use them before the return date.
- A reminder notice is sent by email just before a book comes due.
- An overdue notice is sent a week later with a $1.00 per item.
- An account for full replacement value plus a handling charge is sent for all items not returned or renewed following these notices.

Books not available for loan
Books from the following collections are for use in the library only, and are not able to be borrowed:
- Reference collection
- New Zealand and Pacific Church Collection
- Baumber Collection
- Periodicals
- Rare books
- Theses and dissertations
- Books on the new books display (these may be borrowed after the one week display period)

Books are placed on short loan for St John's College Anglican Studies Programme, Trinity Methodist College courses, the School of Theology at the University of Auckland, and the Department of Theology at the University of Otago. These books cannot be taken out of the library. Your library card is held while you use this material.
Short loan books can be borrowed on overnight and weekend loans, and may be collected 15 minutes prior to the library closing. Such items must be returned as soon as the library opens the following morning.

Library staff can assist distance users with reference enquiries by:
- Identifying relevant print and electronic resources which can be made available by post, email, or fax.
- Helping users to find relevant books on our online catalogue ANGLICAT.
Users can also conduct their own searches by:

Guidelines for postal borrowers
- All intending postal borrowers should make a deposit of $20 with the Library, from which postage will be deducted.
Please make cheques payable to Kinder Library. - To register with the Library, please fill out a registration form and return it, together with your deposit.
- Books are issued for a four week period, including posting time. A fine for overdues will be deducted from your deposit, at the rate of $1 per item for the first overdue notice and $2.50 per item for the second notice.
- Some required reading for courses is held on desk copy in the Library and is not available for borrowing.
- Books returned to the Library by post must be securely wrapped in cardboard or handibags and addressed to:

NOTE: you will be sent reminder emails when your books are overdue. Always ensure the library has your up-to-date email address. If recall notices or overdue reminders are being sent to an out-of-date email address, borrowers will still be liable for the fines incurred. If you are not receiving overdue notices via your email please check with us and your internet provider.
Reference and photocopying service
Articles from periodicals and small sections of a book can be photocopied or scanned for you at 10 cents per page. If the article is available via one of the Library’s online
e-journal collections, you will be directed to that source rather than the library sending a photocopy.

If you are a registered library member, and require books and articles not held by this library, please ask library staff if it can be obtained from another library or provider. Please note that charges may be incurred for this service.

You can request books directly from the library catalogue in a few different ways. Here is the easiest one.
1. Go to the webpage www.kinderlibrary.ac.nz
2. Click on
ANGLICAT (lower right of your screen).
3. Click on
Secure logon (left of screen).
4. In the field
Username or borrower number, key in the barcode from your library card. This will begin P000…… (Note that they are zeros, not Os.)
5. In the field
Password or PIN number, key in the last four numbers from your barcode. (If this includes an X, count the X as a number).
6. Click
Login.
7. To request a book, click on
Catalogue search.
8.The
Easy search is a keyword search. Enter two or three prominent words from your title or topic. You could use an author name if you have one.
9. When you find an item you’d like to request, click on the title. More information about the item appears.
10. Click on the button
Reserve this title at the bottom of the record.
11. At the new screen that appears, alter the
Collect from field and choose
John Kinder from the drop down menu.
12. Click on the
Place reserve button, then the OK button.
13. When you have finished reserving books, click on
Home and
Logout.Your request(s) will appear on a report that is run daily at the John Kinder Theological Library. If book requests are on the shelf, they are normally in the mail the following day. If your request is urgent, please send an email to
kinderlibrary@stjohns.auckland.ac.nz to let us know, and your book(s) will be dispatched by fast post at the earliest possible mail pickup.

Renewing books via the website
Your books are issued for four weeks. You can renew them for a further four weeks
via the online catalogue.
Follow steps 1-6 to renew books on loan.
7. Click on
Username or borrower number information.8. Click on
View issues. Wait a short time for these to come up.
9. Click in the box(es) next to the title(s) you wish to renew.
10. The
Renew selected items button appears. Click on this.
11. Note the new due date, then click
OK.12. To logout, click the
Home button, then
Logout.Please email
kinderlibrary@stjohns.auckland.ac.nz if there are any problems.
