Papers from St Paul’s Cathedral in Dunedin – General Synod 1895
We have recently received three bundles of papers found by the archivist at St Paul’s Cathedral in Dunedin on a shelf in the church safe.
One bundle is labeled “Documents laid on the table, Synod 1895” and another “Archbishop’s letters dating from 1870-1900”.
The Primates of New Zealand during the late 1800s – early 1900s were:
- Henry John Chitty Harper 1869-1890
- Octavius Hadfield 1890-1893
- William Garden Cowie 1893-1902
These papers have possibly ended up at St Paul’s through Samuel Tarratt Nevill, the Primate of New Zealand from 1902-1919, who had been the Bishop of Dunedin.
These papers will make a welcome addition to the General Synod papers that we hold in our archives, which span from its inception in 1843 to 2004.
