Ladies of the Mission

The Ladies of the Mission Group

‘Ladies of the Mission’ photograph

This photograph titled ‘Ladies of the Mission’ is understood to have been taken by William Beattie, a Hobart photographer on his visit to the Melanesian Mission headquarters at Norfolk Island in 1906.  We are trying to identify the women in the photo.  They are all missionaries or wives of missionaries.

Known are back right Mrs Godden, front right Miss Herbert.  We also know that the following are somewhere in the photo: Miss Coombe, Miss Kitchen, Daisy Palmer, possibly Miss Rossiter and Mrs Metcalf.  The woman in the religious habit is Sister Kate (Ivens) of the Community of the Sacred Name, Christchurch.  Back left has been said to be Miss Julia Farr, and certainly, it looks like her, but she returned to her home in Adelaide in 1901, five years before this photo was taken.
