Living legacy: a history of the Anglican Diocese of Auckland. Edited by Allan K. Davidson. Anglican Diocese of Auckland, 2011.
The Anglican Diocese of Auckland resulted from two powerful nineteenth century forces. The first was the Evangelical missionary movement; the second the flood of Anglo-Irish immigrants as part of the growing colonial diaspora. Three significant events contributed to the emergence of the diocese; the arrival of Samuel Marsden and the first Church Missionary Society (CMS) missionaries in the Bay of Islands in 1814 in response to a Maori invitation; and the consecration of George Augustus Selwyn, as Bishop of New Zealand in 1841, and William Garden Cowie as the first designated Anglican Bishop of Auckland in 1869.’ Extract p.14
This recently published, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated book, includes a number of photographs and artworks held in the archive at the Library.
The cover features for example, a painting by Mathew Clayton of ‘Samuel Marsden’ ship, the Active, at Oihi on Christmas Day, 1814, with Rangihoua Pa in the right flying the Union Jack and is also reproduced within the book’s text. (p 129).
