The Anglican Church Military Affairs Committee was established in New Zealand in 1915 and disbanded ca. 2004.  A major focus of the Committee was to raise funds to provide huts, with equipment, staffing and maintenance for Chaplains on active service.  In addition, all Anglican Chaplains, in camp, on troopships, in hospitals and at the Front, were supplied with the ‘necessary equipment to carry out their spiritual duties. All ranks were supplied with hymn books, prayer books, bibles and other amenities.’  (Official press release – ANG 55/2/29)

The Committee’s extensive archive at the Library includes War Funds Office papers ca. 1917 to 1919; papers and correspondence relating to the Overseas Forces in World War Two, Chaplains reports and documents concerning patriotic societies, fundraising appeals and promotional material.

In April 2008, a permanent memorial commemorating the work of the Anglican Defence Force Chaplains ninety years of service was dedicated in the Wellington Cathedral. The plaque reads: “To the glory of God. A tribute to the Anglican Chaplains to the Forces past, present and future.”
