The Baumber collection consists of 980 books of mostly pre-1900 New Zealand titles, which were given to Trinity Methodist College as the gift of the Rev. William Baumber, minister at Pitt Street Church. The collection is strong in 19th-century settler and visitor accounts of New Zealand.
A noteworthy book from the collection (part of Brett’s historical Series) is the ‘Early History of New Zealand 1840-1845’. Topics covered include early European discoveries, stories and biographies of early settlers (including church figures), the Treaty of Waitangi and industry. The book also has wonderful illustrations to feast the eye upon (for example those included in this post).
More recently published titles continue to be added. Books from the Baumber Collection are not available for loan but can be read inside the Library.
