Selwyn in New York

The Selwyn plaque in St John the Divine, New York

Spotted in New York recently by the eagle eye of library team member Jenny Harper, was this impressive Selwyn plaque.

The plaque, located in the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Amsterdam Avenue (reputedly the fourth largest Christian church in the world) survived a major fire in 2001, which caused the cathedral to close until 2008.  See St John Divine for further information about the cathedral.

For more information about Bishop Selwyn see the Te Ara website.

We wonder if anyone knows how the plaque came to be here?

  1. We have in our Selwyn family a similiar plaque of Bishop Selwyn. It has Cast at C.B.Dale on the back. This is Coalbrookdale Cast Iron Co. Shropshire.
I have researched Selwyn College Cambridge but they have no information about ours.
I would be interested to hear if you have any more comments as to other plaques of the Bishop or how your plaque came to New York

    1. If you would like to contact me at the Library email kinderlibrary@stjohns.auckland.ac.nz I can give you some further information about Bishop Selwyn’s American visits. I would be pleased to make contact as I have been working on the Bishop’s correspondence and have had contact with other family members.
