Waiapu Church Gazette

The Waiapu Church Times (1907-1908) and the Waiapu Church Gazette (1910-1945) were the newspapers of the Diocese of Waiapu.  In 1945 the gazette merged with other diocesan newspapers to become Church and People.  The issues of the Times and Gazette up to 1945 are now available on Pūmotomoto.

The only surviving full set of the Waiapu Church Times / Waiapu Church Gazette is held in Napier by the Anglican Diocese of Waiapu, which has meant that they have been largely inaccessible to researchers.  Having them available on Pūmotomoto enables full-text searching or reading of the individual issues.  The paper covers the time of the Napier earthquake, with the event causing a break in production as the Church Offices adjacent to the cathedral lost most of their office content in the fires following the earthquake.

The content includes news of parishes, the travels around the diocese of the bishop, Maori Mission news (in both English and Te Reo), as well as some news from other Diocese in New Zealand and some worldwide Anglican and Christian events such as the July 1910 reporting of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh which is celebrating its centenary this year.
